SEASON 2016
Farra Makes it to 100
On Sunday 1st May, Chris 'Farra' Fawcett waved the flags in his 100th Senior game. Wet and slippery conditions at Coorparoo did little to dampen the mood with lots of fellow umpires watching on. Congratulations Farra and well done on such a milestone!
Season Launch 2016
The official season launch kicked off Lord Stanley Hotel Coorparoo on March 23rd, and the NEAFL panels were also announced on this night. A great night was had by all with a warm welcome and introduction from AFLQUA president Janie McCullagh and some inspirational comments from AFLQ State Umpire manager, Mark Turner. Congrats to all who made the panels in 2016.
NAB Challenge comes to burpengary
On 21st February, a number of umpires got the opportunity to umpire on the lush green grass of the Moreton Bay Sporting Complex as part of the AFL's preseason day at Burpengary. The games involved a curtain raiser, a girls academy game as well as the main AFL match between the Lions and Suns. This day provided many umpires the opportunity to umpire on an AFL standard field, as well as others getting the opportunity to run out their first taste of AFL football. It was a great start to the season for all.
Footy's Nearly Back for 2016!
The 2016 season is fast approaching, with many clubs and umpire departments' preseason training in full swing. The 2016 Preseason cup draw can be found here. Good luck to all AFLQUA umpires this year!

SEASON 2014
Gareth's last day in September
Boundary Umpire and Association member Gareth Hughes has been rewarded for his breakout 2014 season with selection in the AFL Curtain Raiser - NAB AFL Academy vs Allies. on Grand Final day before Sydney and Hawthorn take to the stage.
After doing the NEAFL Grand Final only a few weeks ago, it's great to see a Queensland based umpire given the opportunity to strut his stuff on the biggest stage of all.
Good luck Hughesy!

Umpire Profile - Janie McCullagh
Janie began her umpiring career in the Northern Territory in 2004 through the Katherine District Football League. She is no stranger to sticking her hand up for voluntary roles including being the President of the Tindal Magpies, coaching school football and currently combining her love of umpiring with coaching the Under 16 Ipswich Cats in the Brisbane Juniors.
Among her other awards, Janie was awarded the AFLQ Female Coach of the year in 2012 and umpired the Division 3 Grand Final in 2013. We’re also very fortunate to have Janie volunteer her services on the current Association committee, by representing all our female umpires. Make sure you say hi to Janie next time you see her umpiring, coaching or volunteering. |
Milestones
Scholarships
Congratulations to Association members Matthew Young and Justin Lillecrap, who were presented with their scholarships for representative duties by fellow members Josh Pini and James Strybos. Matthew represented the Association whilst on tour with the AIS in Europe, with Justin travelling interstate at the National Youth Girls Championships.
The Association hopes to do this for all Umpires appointed to representative duties this year. Special mention to the photobombers in the background |
Season Launch
The Association kicked off the new year with the revamped 'Season Launch' on Wednesday 19th March at the Coorparoo Function room. With a big crowd representing all disciplines and all grades, members were presented with their Association gear and treated to Pizza and drinks.
New Umpiring Manager Gary Fila and Community Umpires Manager Andrew Reeves both spoke on the night, with a recurring theme of putting your best foot forward and enjoying the year ahead.
There's still time to join the Association and jump on board with a Platinum, Gold or Silver membership which all feature Association apparel as part of the package. Click here to be taken to the sign up page.
It was awesome to have both groups together again, which has been a challenge in the past. The Association is looking forward to putting on more events throughout the year and hope that you'll be able to join us for those.
The next group event is scheduled for April 30th for an Association General meeting. This will again be at the Coorparoo clubhouse and start after training at 7:30pm
