SEASON 2016

Farra Makes it to 100

On Sunday 1st May, Chris 'Farra' Fawcett waved the flags in his 100th Senior game. Wet and slippery conditions at Coorparoo did little to dampen the mood with lots of fellow umpires watching on. Congratulations Farra and well done on such a milestone!

Season Launch 2016

The official season launch kicked off Lord Stanley Hotel Coorparoo on March 23rd, and the NEAFL panels were also announced on this night. A great night was had by all with a warm welcome and introduction from AFLQUA president Janie McCullagh and some inspirational comments from AFLQ State Umpire manager, Mark Turner. Congrats to all who made the panels in 2016.

NAB Challenge comes to  burpengary

On 21st February, a number of umpires got the opportunity to umpire on the lush green grass of the Moreton Bay Sporting Complex as part of the AFL's preseason day at Burpengary. The games involved a curtain raiser, a girls academy game as well as the main AFL match between the Lions and Suns. This day provided many umpires the opportunity to umpire on an AFL standard field, as well as others getting the opportunity to run out their first taste of AFL football. It was a great start to the season for all.

Footy's Nearly Back for 2016!

The 2016 season is fast approaching, with many clubs and umpire departments' preseason training in full swing. The 2016 Preseason cup draw can be found here. Good luck to all AFLQUA umpires this year!

SEASON 2015

In July, the AFLQUA celebrated the accomplishments of some of its long serving members with the Life Members Dinner. A big thank you to all the members who attended.

Big thanks to Peter Stewart for allowing the AFLQUA to share his photo from the evening.

The AFLQUA wishes to advise all members of the following upcoming events:

AFLQUA General Meeting - 29th July 2015 - Coorparoo Function Room

The AFLQUA Life Members Dinner - 22nd July 2015

QUEENSLAND UMPIRES CONTINUE TO REACH MILESTONES

Since the last update, there have been some tremendous personal milestone games for some of our members.

Goal Umpire Tristan Symes waved his 100th game in the AFL at the Gabba last week.

History was also made when executive member Brett Bradford became just the 7th Queensland umpire in to run 250 senior games of footy.

Garry Downes also umpired his 50th NEAFL game in the goals at Southport as well.

Congratulations to Tristan, Brett and Garry on achieving their milestone games.

dual umpiring debut this weekend

The AFLQUA wish to congratulate Goal Umpires Kate Lushington and Warren Derrick who make their NEAFL debut this weekend at Aspley and Redlands.   Best of luck to the both of you!

NEAFL Umpiring Squad announcement this wednesday night

This Wednesday night (1st April), the 2015 NEAFL umpire squads will be announced at the Coorparoo Function room at approximately 7.40pm.

All attending umpires are asked to dress in either their AFLQUA or NEAFL Polos and black slacks or dress shorts.

AFLQUA Umpires at Pre-Season Grand Final Day

The countdown to the 2015 Home and Away season continued over the weekend with Yeronga hosting the Pre-Season Grand Final Day. Teams from the South East Queensland divisions were competing for early season silverware and our umpiring boys and girls were there as always!

Check out the photos below from throughout the day.  Well run, umpires!

Footy Returns for 2015

Footy has returned to Queensland for 2015! Recently, AFLQUA members were on display at the NAB Challenge weekend at Burpengary on a very hot day that saw Queensland footy of all grades on display.

SEASON 2014

Gareth's last day in September

Boundary Umpire and Association member Gareth Hughes has been rewarded for his breakout 2014 season with selection in the AFL Curtain Raiser - NAB AFL Academy vs Allies. on Grand Final day before Sydney and Hawthorn take to the stage.

After doing the NEAFL Grand Final only a few weeks ago, it's great to see a Queensland based umpire given the opportunity to strut his stuff on the biggest stage of all.

Good luck Hughesy!

Life Member Shirt Presentation

Picture
3 Life Members were presented with their customary 'Life Member' shirts last night at the Associations's general meeting. We were privileged to have Len Davis, Tom McArthur and Chris Guice join us for the entire meeting along with almost 50 other Association members.

Presenting them with their shirts pictured from top is James Strybos with Len Davis, bottom left Chris Guice with Lincoln Jones and bottom right Ryan Downes with Tom McArthur.

We're looking forward to presenting more life member shirts at the annual life members dinner next Tuesday night. You can find out more about our life members by clicking here.

2014 Association Survey

As the current umpiring Terms and Conditions agreement comes to an end after the 2014 season, we are looking to put in place a suitable agreement for the 2015 and 2016 seasons with AFL Queensland.

Your feedback, thoughts and insight into the most pressing issues for umpiring is critical to this process. This is your chance to have your say on what's most important to you, and to have your say on some of the potential changes on the horizon.

This consultation period with a 24 question survey will be open until the end of June, with both members and non-members encouraged to participate. Click below to be taken the survey.

The survey is now closed, thanks for your feedback.

Umpire Profile - Janie McCullagh

Janie began her umpiring career in the Northern Territory in 2004 through the Katherine District Football League. She is no stranger to sticking her hand up for voluntary roles including being the President of the Tindal Magpies, coaching school football and currently combining her love of umpiring with coaching the Under 16 Ipswich Cats in the Brisbane Juniors.

Among her other awards, Janie was awarded the AFLQ Female Coach of the year in 2012 and umpired the Division 3 Grand Final in 2013.

We’re also very fortunate to have Janie volunteer her services on the current Association committee, by representing all our female umpires.

Make sure you say hi to Janie next time you see her umpiring, coaching or volunteering.

Milestones

Congratulations to member Alistair 'Molly' Meldrum who will umpire his 50th senior match this weekend. Make sure you get around the Guru if you see him about.

Scholarships

Congratulations to Association members Matthew Young and Justin Lillecrap, who were presented with their scholarships for representative duties by fellow members Josh Pini and James Strybos. Matthew represented the Association whilst on tour with the AIS in Europe, with Justin travelling interstate at the National Youth Girls Championships.

The Association hopes to do this for all Umpires appointed to representative duties this year.

Season Launch

The Association kicked off the new year with the revamped 'Season Launch' on Wednesday 19th March at the Coorparoo Function room. With a big crowd representing all disciplines and all grades, members were presented with their Association gear and treated to Pizza and drinks.

New Umpiring Manager Gary Fila and Community Umpires Manager Andrew Reeves both spoke on the night, with a recurring theme of putting your best foot forward and enjoying the year ahead.

There's still time to join the Association and jump on board with a Platinum, Gold or Silver membership which all feature Association apparel as part of the package. Click here to be taken to the sign up page.

It was awesome to have both groups together again, which has been a challenge in the past. The Association is looking forward to putting on more events throughout the year and hope that you'll be able to join us for those.

The next group event is scheduled for April 30th for an Association General meeting. This will again be at the Coorparoo clubhouse and start after training at 7:30pm
